XLR to 3.5mm computer microphone, preamp needed?
Ok, so I just got a microphone equipped with an XLR connector, and I anticipate to do some recording with her guitar. I need an adapter to go from XLR to 3.5 mm plug on my computer, my question is will I need a separate preamp for the microphone powerful enough for the computer to pick it up, or will my sound card to the amplifier enough? The MIC has an impedance of 150 ohms if it helps.
Get an external preamp with XLR input, otherwise you lose most of the benefits of using a balanced XLR cable. Problems with the use of an adapter to go with a 3.5 mm connector is unbalanced that even the short distance from the adapter can introduce interference that will not be there with a straight XLR to XLR connection. In addition to this, the most popular grade preamps PC sound card and ADC are extremely low (unless you have a internal audio interface with preamp, high quality), turning the signal from your friendly, expensive mic, a distorted, pixelated mess. Look in a USB or Firewire mic preamp or audio interface that has XLR inputs and phantom power option.
