Handheld Microphones
The only thing that really separates your wedding video of your pictures is the audio. Collection of excellent audio performance is the key to a fantastic video. In fact, most people can forgive one or two bad shots, but the poor audio quality at key times can really ruin a video otherwise memorable moment.
Although the equipment is the first step to excellent audio performance. The number one most valuable tools in the arsenal of wedding videographer is a reliable wireless microphone lavaliere. The key word here is reliable. A microphone that works "mostly" just will not cut it. A UHF system is a minimum requirement and a diversity system is recommended. Less expensive, non-diversity units are subject to loss of audio which gives the bride wondering why she could not hear his prayers. Do not forget to note that the UHF wireless microphones operate on some of the same frequencies as the Digital Television Stations. I just downloaded a list of frequencies for digital television in the Orlando area and locked in my audio kit to make sure not to tune my mics to one of these frequencies.
Now that you have the equipment necessary to give you a fighting chance to get excellent audio performance for your wedding video, you need to know how to use it. Last correct positioning is important. The best position that you are a VBL is on the groom's boutonniere. The groom is close enough to the officiant to pick their Audio (they usually speak very loud anyway), and when the bride and groom face each other for Christmas, the MIC will be perfectly placed for both pick-up the groom and bride audio. A micro handheld wireless is ideal for comments from guests at the reception. A wired MIC enough, but when of a crowded reception, a six-foot cable can be a liability. Remember, if possible, always record the natural sounds micro camera. Natural sound can be very useful music, guest speakers or other sound system that runs through the room. Several wedding videos I have received from me a second microphone placed near the PA speaker church so I could hear clearly the parts of the ceremony which took place outside the wireless microphone on the husband.
With the right equipment and some practice using it, you should never have to fear you excellent audio performance from your wedding video shoots.
