Here are a number of services available that allow you to make Internet phone calls using VOIP for free. These services are divided into two broad categories. 1) PC software applications made available free or at low cost that allows PC-to-phone calls over VOIP and PC 2) providers of VoIP services that allow PC to PC phone calls as a lead-in to their pay services (such as PC to phone fixed or mobile). Many of these applications can also IM or chat services to users, and some are compatible with Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL messaging Instant.
The first category consists entirely of free or low-cost PC softphone applications that are widely available for download. They range from freeware to shareware applications available for purchase. Most of these applications rely on existing PC hardware (microphone and speakers or headphones) to do a PC softphone. The common denominator in all these applications is that both participants in the telephone call over the Internet must be running the same PC softphone, or at least running a program that supports the same protocol on both ends.
A Good example of programs like this is ExpressTalk, which uses SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) standard, one that has gained broad acceptance. Microsoft Windows Messenger uses SIP. A SIP provider is required to ExpressTalk, but you can register with many SIP providers without charge. ExpressTalk includes a set feature-rich, with support for features such as CallerID, data compression, using a maximum of 4 lines and multi-party calling. ExpressTalk provides an interface with a very friendly one-click access to the phonebook and integrated composition to click. Currently, there is at least one SIP provider, Voipbuster, which offers free calls to landlines and mobile numbers. However, a maximum of 120 days for free calls before a commission is charged.
Another source for mobile software free PC to PC to PC VoIP calls is the download site software major. Most applications available on these sites require both users to run the same software. In addition, many of these programs are freeware with limited support.
Probably the most recognizable name in the second category (PC softphones offered free as an introduction to paid services) is Skype. This supplier has launched a number of years by providing a PC softphone users have helped to make PC to PC phone calls Free Internet. Skype has since evolved into a full-scale service, but still offers one of the best free PC softphones available. Skype offers now SkypeIn and SkypeOut calls to and from fixed and mobile users. Although the paid feature, Skype has made this service available free to December 31, 2006. Also, there is a wide assortment of USB and wireless handsets and ATA type devices available for use with Skype. Another advantage the use of Skype is that it is available for PC, Mac or Linux.
Other examples of this type of supplier are Firefly and Gizmo Project. These providers offer free PC softphone app that can be downloaded and used to make PC to PC phone calls over the Internet for free. They also allow calls to landlines and mobile users an additional cost, which varies between suppliers.
Google Talk, which is still in beta, offers a unique hybrid features such as voice, chat, instant messaging, e-mail and file transfer. Google Talk will probably even wider use, and interoperability is a major objective for the product. Google Talk is now available free and is free to use.
As you can see, it is still possible to get the free VoIP service. While most free services only allow calls from PC to PC completely free, thorough research can identify providers with long free trial for calls to landlines and mobile users.
